CHENNAI: Cadre and the leader of a fringe pro-Tamil outfit were arrested by the city police on Monday after they attempted to proceed on a rally to remove the statue of yesteryear Telugu star Sobhan Babu in retaliation to the removal of the statue of slain LTTE leader Prabakaran at Nagapattinam.

Velankannai police removed the statue of the slain LTTE chief from the Sevugaraya Ayyanar temple in South Poigainallur village in Nagapattinam in the wee hours on June 6, which sparked Monday’s protest.

The outfit, Tamilar Munnetra Padai (TMP), which has incorporated Prabakaran’s picture in its name board, passed a resolution condemning the police for removing the statue, and also resolved to bring down Sobhan Babu’s statue at Mehta Nagar First Main Road, off Nelson Manickam Road.

The outfit members, led by Veeralakshmi, attempted to take out a rally from Nazarethpet near Poonamallee on Monday morning. The Nazarethpet cops held talks with the protestors to dissuade them, but they did not pay heed and attempted to proceed. The members were then arrested but released later.
