THENI: The three-member supervising committee of Mullai Periyar dam will inspect the dam site on June 22 to discuss various issues with officials.

A Public Works Department (PWD) source said the Supereme Court issued an order to raise the water level in Mullai Periyar dam from 136ft to 142ft on May 7, 2014. The dam is strong enough to hold even after the water level has been increased.

The Supereme Court issued an order to form a three-member committee to monitor the dam properly.

The committee headed by Nathan, chief engineer, Central Water Resource Commission, was formed later in which Saikumar, former principal secretary, PWD was deputed as the state representative in the committee when Kurian, principal secretary, Water Irrigation department, Kerala was also deputed as a representative of Kerala state.

Palaniappan, principal secretary, PWD, has been deputed as the state representative for the three member committee at present when Saikumar was moved to Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB). The committee will inspect the dam at first.

The panel then may discuss with officials of the two states various matters, including raising the water level to 152ft from the present 142ft. The committee visits the dam site after seven months' break.
