CHENNAI: Admission counselling for BE/BTech courses under the government quota for Anna University and 538 affiliated colleges in the State is scheduled to begin on July 1, the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) officials said.

As many as 1,54,238 applicants to TNEA 2015 were assigned random numbers at Anna University on Monday in the presence of the Secretary for Higher Education Apoorva, vice- chancellor M Rajaram and TNEA secretary V Rhymend Uthariaraj among others.

TNEA officials said the rank list would be announced on June 19 at 10 am after which call letters will be sent to eligible students notifying them of the day and time to appear for counselling.  Counselling for sports quota will take place on June 28 and for the differently-abled category on June 29. General counselling will begin on July 1 and last till July 31.

“All arrangements will be complete by June 25. Year after year, such arrangements are made at a significant cost. There will be 50 counselling terminals at the premises,” said Uthariaraj.

“Students will also get SMS alerts three days before the counselling informing them of the day and time allocated to them,” he added.

Uthariaraj said 1,78,917 seats were available under the government quota while, as on date, 21,741 seats had been surrendered to be filled through counselling by private colleges. Together, the total number of seats to be filled through counselling at present stands at 2,00,658.

“Colleges have time till the start of counselling date to surrender seats which they believe will have no takers under the management quota. Surrendering of seats is also because colleges think they can get quality students through the counselling process,” Uthariaraj said.

The total number of applications received is about 10 per cent less than the previous year when 1.73 lakh applications were received, Uthariaraj said.

Random number to settle ties

Random numbers help generate merit list and settle ties. Factors such as percentage marks in Maths followed by Physics and in the fourth optional subject, followed by date of birth and finally the random number is evaluated to resolve a tie in merit list.
