Host of Programmes to Mark June 21 Celebration in Pondy

PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry administration has plans to organise various programmes on World Yoga Day, which falls on June 21. The administration will spend `4 lakh for the event.

A function would be organised by the Puducherry administration at the Gandhi Thidal, Beach Road where around 3,500 students from various schools of Puducherry and yoga enthusiasts from yoga centres would perform mass yoga demonstration in the morning, said Tourism Minister P Rajavelu.

Yoga related programmes will be organised at the same venue in the evening for the benefit of tourists and public.

Briefing newsmen along with Director of Tourism R Mounissamy and Director of Health and Family Welfare Dr K V Raman, Rajavelu said that lecture on yoga topics, yoga demonstration, mass meditation, yoga therapy  and other aspects of yoga would be the major activates in the evening session. The general public can take part in the celebration to realise the value of yoga and its inherent benefits. 

Rajavelu said that the UN General Assembly recognised that yoga provides a holistic approach to health and well being. Yoga also brings harmony in life and thus is known for disease prevention, health promotion and management of many lifestyle related disorders. The one-day event is focused on creating awareness on various beneficial aspects of yoga, he said.

Several groups and organisations have come forward to extend all necessary assistance to the students participating in the yoga demonstration. Around 3,500 caps with yoga emblems would be distributed to the students.
