VILLUPURAM/NAGERCOIL: Two school girls riding bicycles died when they were hit by a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus while they were returning home after buying stationery near Vikrawandi on Monday evening.
According to police, M Anbarasi (12) and A Ponniammal (12) of Echankuppam village near T Puthupalayam, both studying class VIII in a Government Higher Secondary School at Thepair, went to Puthupalayam to buy the stationery after class and were returning home on their bicycles.
It was then the bus plying between Villupuram and S Puthur knocked them down near the school.
Anbarasi died on the spot while Ponniammak got hurt. Villagers sent her to the Government Medical College Hospital in Mundiampakkam, but she died on the way.
Periyathachur police have registered a case and arrested the TNSTC driver E Seenuvasan(40) of Nagar village near Tindivanam for speeding and causing the accident.
2 Kids Killed in Accident
Two children were killed and eight others injured when the autorickshaw in which they were travelling collided with a van near Puthery here on Tuesday.
Police said, Ramesh (36) from Puthery, was taking nine children from an aided school back home and when his speeding auto was on the Puthery Railway Overbridge, he tried to overtake another vehicle and failed to notice a van coming from the opposite direction and collided with it. Ramesh and the children sustained injuries and were to a private hospital.
Doctors said that Kirthiga (6) and Danush (7), both of Puthery, were brought dead. Ramesh, who was severely injured, is in a critical condition and shifted to another private hospital.
The injured were identified as Aswin (12), Jeyram (7), Sri Jai (4), Sanjith (3), Sivapriya (14), Divya (3) and Pooja (11).
Traffic police are investigating. After a preliminary inquiry, police said that the mistake was on the part of Ramesh.
