MADURAI/ THANJAVUR:The City Central Crime Branch has registered a case on Saturday against five persons, including a woman, for cheating a businessman in Madurai of Rs 35 lakh on a promise to get his son an MBBS seat in a Puducherry college.
According to police, M Thirupathi of Narimedu, a businessman, sought the help from Sardhar of Paravai, who claimed to know persons with political influence in Puducherry to get an MBBS seat for his son.
In 2014, Sardhar along with his family members including wife Malliga Begum and son Rafique got Rs 6 lakh from Thirupathi. Sardhar promised him that he would get the seat with the help of Anandharaman and Vijayamohan.
As requested by Sardhar, Thirupathi gave Rs 29 lakh to Anandharaman and Vijayamohan in 2014 but they failed to get a seat. They promised to do so this year. But this year too the two did not get the seat.
BE Seat Fraud
Police on Saturday arrested two persons for cheating a student who was seeking admission to a private university here.
According to police, the men came to know that V Ravikumar (50) of T Nagar in Chennai was seeking admission for his daughter to the university. One of the men impersonated a staff of the university and made a call to Ravikumar and demanded Rs 1.5 lakh for admission of his daughter to the undergraduate engineering degree course.
Ravikumar, who got suspicious, called the university administration. After making enquiries with the university he found that the caller was a fake. He filed a complaint with Vallam police.
Based on the complaint, police made investigations. Police tracked the phone number of the caller and arrested realtor E Senthilkumaran (41) of Athikkottai in Thanjavur district and his driver B Ramesh (32) of Thondiarpettai.
