TIRUCHY/COIMBATORE:  Six persons died in two separate accidents that happened in Tiruchy and Coimbatore.

Three persons, including a mother and son, were killed on the spot late on Saturday when a speeding vehicle ran over them after they fell on Tiruchy-Karur national highway. A mini van brushed the motorcycle when the van driver tried to overtake it.

The deceased were identified as S Krishnadevi (45) of South Manathattai in Karur district, her son S Manivannan (29), a BHEL employee and their relative Kalaichelvan (28) of the same area.

According to police, Manivannan, who got married to a girl from Thiruverumbur one-and-half years ago, was proceeding to his father-in-law’s house to visit his wife and their baby boy on a two wheeler. His mother Krishnadevi and Kalaichelvan were riding pillion. While they were near Pettaivaithalai, Manivannan lost control of his bike after a speedy van brushed the two-wheeler while overtaking. In the impact, all the three fell on the middle of the road.  An unidentified vehicle coming from behind ran over the three and killed them on the spot.

On information, Pettaivaithalai police reached the spot and conducted  inquiries. From an identity card Manivannan had in his pocket, police came to know who they were and informed their relatives. The three bodies were sent to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital for postmortem.

A case has been registered and  further inquiries are on.

Meanwhile, in Coimbatore, three members of a family were killed, and six others suffered minor injuries after two cars collided head-on near Madukkarai early Sunday morning.

Police said none of the occupants of the luxury vehicle died in the collision on a bridge along L&T Bypass Road. The injured were admitted to a private hospital for treatment.

Madukkarai police identified the dead as C Palanisamy (66), his wife, P Indrani (60), and son, P Senthil Kumar (39) from Somanur. Palanisamy was a farmer in Somanur, they said. The three were on their way to a temple in Palakkad when the accident took place. Police said the luxury car, driven by M Anish Kumar (26), crossed over to the oncoming traffic that led to the collision. Apart from Anish Kumar, five of his friends, all below 29 years of age, were in the car. They were heading to Hogenakkal for a holiday. The impact of the head-on collision was so severe that the two vehicles were catapulted off the road. The three occupants of the small car died on the spot.
