

PUDUCHERRY:Standardisation of yoga therapy modules, setting up the JIPMER institute of yoga and naturopathy (JIYAN), and starting of post graduate courses in yoga are some of the plans chalked out for the future by the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER).
JIPMER director Dr S C Parija announced this while speaking at a national workshop organised to celebrate International Day of Yoga on Sunday. Chief Minister N Rangasamy inaugurated the workshop, which was held by JIPMER’s Advanced Centre for Yoga Therapy and Research (ACYTER) in collaboration with the Central Council for research in Yoga and Naturopathy, Ministry of AYUSH, New Delhi.
Dr Parija said the ACYTER was established in 2008 in JIPMER under the Department of AYUSH, Union Ministry of Health, in collaboration with Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga. Revealing that the ACYTER has plans to achieve objective of the standardisation of yoga therapy modules for various diseases, he said at present no cohort studies have been conducted in larger sample size to establish appropriate standard yoga therapy modules for specific lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and for various behavioural disorders. Therefore, ACYTER plans to standardize yoga therapy modules for these specific diseases through the conduct of appropriately designed research projects, he added.
Further, he said in the 12th five year plan, `6 crores had been earmarked for JIPMER; and the ACYTER will be upgraded to JIPMER Institute of Yoga and Naturopathy (JIYAN) with state-of-the-art research facilities. He also informed that JIPMER has plans to start courses in yoga such as MSc (Yoga) and MD (Yoga).
