

COIMBATORE:Thousands of people took part in yoga programmes held across the district on Sunday to celebrate the International Day of Yoga.
People were amazed by the 95-year-old Nanammal performance of yoga at Race Course where she demonstrated many asanas including Ardha Sirsasana.
Despite continuous drizzling, thousands of people, especially children, participated in the programme at Race Course wearing raincoats or windcheaters and learned Surya Namaskar, Pranayama, etc.
At Mani Mahal near Hopes College in the city, hundreds of people were initiated into simple yogic practice.
Nearly 100 Army personnel performed asanas at the Madukkarai military camp.
At the Nehru Stadium, nearly 1,000 NCC cadets participated in a yoga programme.
Corporation Commissioner K Vijayakarthikeyan, the chief guest at the event, said the the International Day of Yoga would create awareness about the relationship between physical and mental health. He also said that we must educate our children about the importance of sciences like Yoga and Ayurveda.
Yoga is easy to practice, but potent enough to enhance health, joy, peace, love and enable inner exploration and success. Yoga will help people to cope with the hectic pace of modern life and realise their full potential in all spheres of life, he said.
A large number of students and staff participated in the yoga programme at the Kumaraguru College of Technology.
The Amrita School of Business organised a yoga programme from 9 am to 1 pm at the Amrita University’s Ettimadai campus.
Ram Mohan Menon, chief people officer, Inatech Infosolutions, gave a lecture on the role of yoga and spirituality in corporate careers. Amritapuri Ashram’s yoga instructor Gitamba spoke on Yoga - A Holistic Perspective, pointing out the many benefits of yoga.
