COIMBATORE: Three persons belonging to the same family were killed while six people suffered minor injuries when two cars collided head-on on a bridge on the L&T Bypass near Madukkarai early on Sunday morning.

While all the three who died were in a small car, the others were in a luxury vehicle, police said. The impact of the collision was such that the two vehicles were thrown off the road. The three occupants of the small car died on the spot. The bodies were sent for postmortem.

Those injured were admitted to a private hospital. Their injuries are not life-threatening.

The deceased - C Palanisamy (66), his wife, P Indrani (60), and their son, P Senthil Kumar (39), from Somanur - were going to a temple in Palakkad when the tragedy took place.

Police said the luxury car, driven by one Anish Kumar (26), crossed over into the oncoming traffic, resulting in the collision. Five of Anish Kumar’s friends were also in the car. They were on a holiday visit to Hogenakkal.

The luxury vehicle was trying to overtake another vehicle when the collision took place, but the police are not sure whether it was speeding. They are continuing investigations.

The Madukkarai police have registered a case against Anish Kumar under IPC sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304A (causing death by negligence).
