Uprooted by Gale, Coconut Tree Kills 55-yr-old Woman

VELLORE:A 55-year-old widow, died on the spot when a decades-old coconut tree uprooted and fell on her while she was carrying out her daily chores in the backyard of her house on Saturday evening.

The woman, identified as Kuppammal, died when a coconut tree fell on her head while she was washing clothes in her backyard in Elavanpadi in Virupachipuram on Saturday evening. She was the wife of the late ‘Design’ Raja and was living with her daughter and son-in-law in the locality. According to a police official, Kuppammal was washing clothes near a well, located in the backyard of her house when, due to high winds on Saturday evening, the decades old coconut tree which had been tottering, fell over her head killing her on the spot around 6 pm in the evening.

Kuppamal’s son-in-law, J Saravanan (42), becoming concerned when Kuppamal had not returned home, went to the backyard of his house and found her lying dead with head injuries with the coconut tree next to her body. He alerted the police  and  case was registered in Virupachipuram police station. An inquiry is on.

Teen Kills Self

A 13-year-old student of Class 9 studying in Walajah Higher Secondary School, allegedly committed suicide unable to bear the pain in her stomach that she had been suffering from for several years.

The girl, identified as Pavithra, daughter of Kandeeban(38), a resident of Thirumalai Cheri in Walajah, allegedly killed herself by hanging from a fan with her mother’s saree on Saturday evening.

According to police, Pavithra had some health-related problems in her stomach for several years and used to get treated in a private hospital in Walajah.  However, her condition and her pain only worsened. On Saturday, her father Kandeeban, a lorry driver, went to Chennai on work.

Her mother took her cows to pasture in a field nearby. Police say that it would have been around 4 pm, that she took the extreme step.
