Lactating Moms get Rooms in Bus Stands

CHENNAI: The Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday inaugurated separate enclosures for lactating mothers in 352  bus stands across Tamil Nadu including the one at Koyambedu Bus Terminus in the city, through video conferencing at the Secretariat.

These enclosures have steel seats, dust bin, drinking water, toilet and fan. The Chief Minister has directed that a small table and bench should be placed in these enclosures to help lactating mothers keep their belongings.

She also inaugurated seven Mother’s milk banks at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital (Tiruchy), Government Rajaji Hospital (Madurai), Government Medical College Hospital (Coimbatore), Government Medical College Hospital (Theni), Mohan Kumaramangalam Government Medical College Hospital (Salem), Raja Mirasdar Government Hospital (Thanjavur) and Government Hospital for Women and Children (Egmore).

In 2014, mother’s milk bank was started at the Institute of Child Health.

Each mother’s milk bank has been provided `10 lakh for equipment like refrigerators, breast milk pumps, etc. The milk collected in these banks could be stored for three months and provided to babies in need, an official release here said.

Breastfeeding Week is being observed during August 1-7 and ‘Breastfeeding and work - let’s make it work’ is the theme this year.

When lactating mothers need to travel to other places for work, they have to wait at bus terminals. The separate rooms offer them privacy.

Jaya Reviews Law & Order Situation

Chennai: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday reviewed the law and order situation prevailing in the State with senior ministers and top officials. This assumes significance in view of the sporadic agitations in various parts of the State demanding enforcement of prohibition. Those who took part in the meeting included Finance and PWD Minister O Panneerselvam, Electricity Minister R Viswanathan, Housing Minister R Vaithilingam, Chief Secretary K Gnanadesikan, Advisors to State government - Sheela Balakrishnan and K Ramanujam, DGP Ashok Kumar, ADDP (Law and Order) T Rajendran and S Davidson Devasirwatham, IG, Intelligence.
