Patients with Spinal Injuries Seek Ward

VELLORE: Several spinal-cord injury patients from across the state appealed to the state government, on Wednesday, for separate wards for patients with injuries to the spinal cord in all government hospitals and Primary Health Care centres in the state.

In a meeting hosted by the Spinal Injury Patients Association (SIPA) of Vellore, Palani of SIPA said the state should address spinal cord injuries with greater concern as they are not just diffabled but also suffer from multiple organ problems and therefore require special attention.

He urged the government to give wide publicity to measures for the prevention of spinal cord injuries. Family members of such patients require socio-psychological counselling. The majority of patients with spinal injuries do not live long due to the associated organ failures. The state should announce a special insurance scheme for family members, he added.
