MDMK Stir in Kodai Against Unilever Firm

CHENNAI:  MDMKgeneral secretary Vaiko on Friday announced that his party would stage a protest in Kodaikanal on September 4, demanding the removal of mercury waste dumped by Hindustan Unilever company.

The company was closed in 2001 on the charge of polluting the environment.

At the time of closure, the company had agreed to remove the 290 tonnes of mercury waste it had generated, but failed to do so.

The mercury waste had been dumped behind the factory, which was found during recent raids, Vaiko said.

Kodaikanal, a tourist spot, and its famous lake had been polluted due to the mercury waste, he said.

Vaiko urged the State and Central governments to force the company remove the waste.
