Man, Mother Held for Wife’s Suicide

VELLORE: A 26-year-old man and his mother were arrested here on Saturday after a Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) inquiry into the suicide of a newly-married woman on January 28 revealed she took the extreme step over dowry harassment.

P Jamuna (20) had married Prasanth (26), a resident of Pullaneri, a year ago. Prasanth used to work in Singapore while Jamuna stayed with her mother-in-law Kasturi. Prasanth had returned home last month on leave.

On January 28, Jamunu allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a tree in the garden of their house. The RDO inquiry found that the woman had committed suicide over dowry harassment from Prasanth and Kasturi, who had been demanding `2 lakh from Jamuna’s parents. Kasturi and Prasanth were arrested and remanded on Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, a 26-year-old daily wage labourer allegedly hung himself to death at his house in Konavattam after his estranged wife sent a divorce notice to him, here on Saturday evening.

The police said that the couple used to have frequent fights and she left for her parent’s home after one such fight.  Begam recently sent a legal notice Basha. Depressed over the impending divorce, Basha, hung himself.  A case was registered at the Vellore Taluk police station and an inquiry was on.
