Rs 54,500 Seized from DMK Workers, Srirangam Tense

3 hurt, four held as cadre of the party clash with AIADMK over money distribution

TIRUCHY:A clash broke out between the cadre of AIADMK and DMK for alleged distribution of cash to the voters here on Wednesday, injuring three persons. Police arrested four DMK workers and seized cash of Rs 54,500 believed to be kept for distribution.

On Wednesday, Returning officer V Manoharan received information on distribution of cash to the voters of Srirangam Ward 1 by DMK cadre. Soon, he deputed flying squad tahsildhar Sivasankaran to the spot. When he went to the spot, he found seven DMK cadre, who were in a car, distributing money.

A group of 50 AIADMK cadre who came to know about the incident, assembled at the spot and exchanged heated arguments, which snowballed into a clash in which three DMK cadre sustained injuries.

The flying squad rushed to the spot and arrested Ravi, Dinakar, Arumugam and Ramajayam and seized cash of Rs 54,500. Meanwhile, DMK advocates submitted a petition with the returning officer against AIADMK for violation of EC’s code of conduct. 

As the Sriragam bypoll campaign has picked up, arch rivals AIADMK and DMK are giving their best shot to woo voters.

While all the ministers have been campaigning for AIADMK candidate S Valarmathi, the DMK, as a counter move, have brought in all heavyweights to campaign for N Anand. Meanwhile, DMK treasurer M K Stalin will campaign in Srirangam for three days from February 9.
