'All in Pondy Will Get 140L Water a Day'

PUDUCHERRY:Chief Minister N Rangasamy has assured supply of 140 litres of drinking water per person per day to residents of Union Territory. The Chief Minister gave this assurance while speaking at a function to inaugurate two drinking water facilities on Thursday.

N Rangasamy inaugurated a newly-laid water supply distribution system replacing the existing pipes in the North, Central and South parts of Zone 1 of the Boulevard and its surrounding areas. The work was taken up in 2012 at an estimated cost of Rs 70 crore by availing finance from HUDCO and was completed in January 2015. Under the scheme, 128 kilometres of pipeline laid 35 years back have been replaced with new ductile Iron pipes. 

The Chief Minister also dedicated a new OHT at Thanthai Periyar Nagar with 20 lakh litres capacity under Zone 8, constructed at a cost of Rs 18 crore. Besides, a new overhead tank is being constructed at Angalamman Nagar with a capacity of 20 lakh litres to meet the growing needs of people.

At present, water is supplied from two overhead tanks at the Public Health Division (PWD) office at Uppalam and  Bharathidasan College to the North, Central and Southern grids with 7,500 connections. 

Supply of water to the two OHTs is from borewells at Muthirapalayam and Krishna Nagar.
