VELLORE:The District Science Centre here is all set to have a digital planetarium be set up at a cost of Rs 22 lakh besides a 15 lakh worth 3D theatre. District Science Centres at Coimbatore and Tiruchy too would receive digital planetariums, this year.

This was disclosed by Dr P Iyamperumal, executive director of the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, Chennai on Friday.

Iyamperumal was here to distribute prizes to the winners of the Math and Science Talent test, organised by the District Science Centre recently, in commemoration of the birth anniversary of Math genius Srinivasa Ramanujan. The digital planetarium would consist of an inflammable dome that could be fixed in a small area to enable children to learn about the planets and stars.

A similar planetarium was already available at the Chennai Birla Planetarium, Iyamperumal said.

Some of the hardware and software used in the 3D theatre system will be imported, he said, adding that the students will get a real feeling of the concepts depicting real world situations while watching science and animated movies.
