COIMBATORE:A five-day-old girl was found abandoned in front of a private institution near Sulur on Sunday. Interestingly, gold jewellery and Rs 10,000 was left along with the child.

According to sources, around 3.30 am on Sunday a man and woman came to a private education institution at Ravuthur, near Sulur, by a two-wheeler. The watchman, who heard the sound of the vehicle, woke up and saw that the woman had dropped off a child in front of the gate and sped away.

The education institution had earlier housed an orphanage, which ran into controversy over trafficking. The watchman immediately alerted the Singanallur police and ChildLine number for children in distress. Members of ChildLine, police and personnel from the anti-human trafficking unit rushed to the spot and found a five-day-old girl. Along with the baby was found a gold chain, ring and Rs 10,000 cash.

“A man was riding the bike and the woman was riding pillion, They fled after leaving the baby at the gate. The child was handed over to a children’s home in Podanur. The child will be produced before the Child Welfare Committee and based on its order further action will be taken,” said a police official involved in the operation.
