Plastic Surgeon Gets Rs 1.5 Cr Accident Relief

CUDDALORE:A 50-year-old doctor from Puducherry, who was injured in road accident in Cuddalore in 2011, was awarded a compensation of Rs 1.52 crore by the additional sub-court, here on Friday. This is the highest compensation awarded in the district so far.

According to sources, Dr Ramachandradu, a native of Puducherry, was a plastic surgeon working in a number of private hospitals in Cuddalore and Puducherry.

In May 2011, after undertaking a surgery at the Cuddalore Abirami hospital, Ramachandradu was returning to Puducherry on his motorbike around 9 pm. While nearing Periyakattupalayam, in Cuddalore, a speeding car hit his bike.

The doctor suffered severe injuries to his head and also sustained a fracture to his arm. He was first taken to Arupadai Veedu Medical college hospital in Puducherry, before being referred to the JIPMER. The doctor filed a case at the additional sub-court in Cuddalore against the car owner and the New India insurance company seeking compensation. Advocates Rama Radhakrishnan and A S Chandrasekaran appeared for doctor Ramachandradu.

Pronouncing the judgment, judge Selva Muthukumari ordered the insurance company to give Rs 1.52 crore as compensation to the doctor.

Advocate Chandrasekaran said, “We argued that Dr Ramachandradu had the capacity of earning more income through his profession. But due to the accident, he could not continue his profession. Considering our argument, the court ordered the insurance company to give Rs 1.52 crore as compensation.”

“The court has also ordered the insurance company to give the compensation with the interest of 7.5 per cent for the period between the date on which the case was filed and the date on which the compensation amount is given,” he added.
