Delta Methane Project Closed Chapter: Govt

CHENNAI: Chief Minister O Panneerselvam on Monday told the State Assembly that the methane extraction project in Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur and Tiruvarur was a closed chapter, thereby allaying fears over the project implementation.

“Since former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had put on hold the project on July 16, 2013, and the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the State government and the Great Eastern Energy Corporation Limited (GEEC) expired on January 4, 2015, the project remains scrapped. So, don’t raise an alarm over a dead issue,” Panneerselvam said, replying to the discussion on the motion of thanks for the Governor’s address.

Recalling the assurance of Jayalalithaa that as far as the AIADMK government was concerned, projects were implemented for the people, he said the experts committee appointed by her for studying the environmental impact of the project would submit its report soon.
