Eight Youth Held for Running Fake ATM Card Racket

TIRUCHY/KARAIKAL:City police have busted a fake ATM card racket arresting eight youth while they were attempting to withdraw money using fake ATM cards on Thursday. Police also recovered 65 fake ATM cards, 12 cell phones, cash of `2 lakh and two cars used for this purpose.

According to police, a team of night patrol team grew suspicious when they saw two cars parked in front of an ATM at Thendral Nagar in KK Nagar in the city around 1 am on Thursday. A group of youngsters were standing beside the cars.

When the police inquired about their presence in front of the ATM, each had a different story to tell. Sensing that something was wrong, all of them were taken to KK Nagar police station.

During interrogation, the youth were identified as S Suman (27) of Ayyappa Nagar in KK Nagar and Prasath (26) of RVS Nagar in Khajamalai, both Sri Lankan Tamils and Milton Ganesh (29), Devathanam, Anantha Kumar (27), Laxmi Narasimhar Street in Srirangam, Ilamaran (29) and R Kamalanathan (28) of Srinivasa Nagar, Vigneshwaran (24) of BHEL near Thuvakkudi and Karthik (ailas Govindarajan (28) of Kamaraj Nagar in Airport.  

It came to light that the gang had withdrawn lakhs of rupees from various ATMs using fake cards in and around the city for the last few months.

According to their statement, one of their friends called Surya who has been working in London, had been sending the secret PIN numbers of ATM cards, by fraudulently knowing them from those visiting malls and commercial establishments in London. The gang produced fake ATM cards using the pin numbers of London citizens and had been withdrawing money. All of them were living a luxurious life utilising the money acquired fraudulently, police added.

KK Nagar police registered a case and are investigating to ascertain whether the gang had a hand in any other criminal activity.

Robber Nabbed

A 35-year-old man charged for robbing `2 lakh from a customer from a nationalised bank was detained by the Karaikal town police on Thursday.

CCTV cameras installed in the bank premises had captured the images of a robber taking to heels with the money withdrawn by a customer. The accused was nabbed within a day while he was waiting at a bus stop near Karaikal.

According to police, the man was identified as Kandhamoorthy (35), of Nedungadu in Karaikal.
