Police Probe Role of MLA in Ambur Riot

VELLORE:The police have launched an investigation into the alleged role of Aslam Basha, Member of Legislative Assembly of Ambur, into violence against police personnel on Saturday night.

Many locals claimed that it was a “planned” attack on the policemen and Aslam Basha instigated angry Muslim youth, who were involved in the attack. They had gathered for a protest to condemn the death of 26-year-old Shameel Ahmed who was allegedly kept in illegal detention and beaten up by the Pallikonda police. Shameel Ahmed died later. Meanwhile, the DGP suspended Pallikonda inspector Martin Premraj, who had allegedly detained Shameel.

“We suspect that the MLA had a role in the clash. During inquiry, we were told that he instigated the violence. We will look into it,” said a senior police officer.

The protest left 38 policemen, including women personnel, injured. Four of them sustained grievous injuries.
