Ukkadam Lake Beautification to Ease Traffic Woes

COIMBATORE:Works related to beautification of Ukkadam big tank (Periyakulam) bund is expected to be completed by end of June and the corporation is hoping that this would bring an end to the traffic problem on  Athupalayam-Ukkadam road.

As part of the project, an road, exclusively for two-wheerlers is being laid and if the works are completed, two-wheeler proceeding to Ukkadam would be diverted through the bund road, thus easing traffic on Athupalayam-Ukkadam road.

According to sources, 30 solar-powered street light poles have been installed as part of the beautification project and works on laying of steel fencing around the bund is nearing completion. Now works on laying paver blocks on the bund are going on and the entire works are likely to be completed at the end of June, sources added.

The civic body has allotted Rs 4.95 crore for laying a 1.2 kilometre stretch road exclusively for two-wheelers and beautify the tank bund.

Initially, many environmentalists raised objection to the corporation's move to lay a road near the bund.

“This would shrink the bund space and would ultimately pollute the lake. However, the civic body official argued that this is must to decongest traffic on Athupalayam-Ukkadam road.

“It would take at least 10 minutes to cross Ukkadam junction during peak hours. Traffic congestion would be more on holidays,” said a corporation official.
