Pondicherry University Ranked 13 in NIFR Rankings

PUDUCHERRY: Pondicherry University has been ranked 13 in the National Institutional    Ranking Framework (NIFR) of the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

According to the ranking released earlier last week, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore occupied the pride of place followed by Institute o Chemical Technology, Mumbai was second while Jawaharlal Nehru University was third in the rankings.

Other University’s rankings are University of Hyderabad, Telengana (4th), Tezpur University, Assam (5th), and University of Delhi (6th).

Others ahead of PU are Banaras Hindu University (7th), Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram (8th), Pilani Birla Institute Science and Technology (9th), Aligarh Muslim University (10th), Viswa Bharati (11th), and Punjab University (12th)

Tamil Nadu’s Bharathiar University is placed 14 in the rankings decided on various parameters of the NIRF.

Pondicherry Central University were assessed s under the various parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR),” “Research and Professional Practices (RPC),” “Graduation Outcomes (GO),” “Outreach and Inclusivity (OI),” and “Perception”.

The Pondicherry University’s  scores are : TLR - 70.64/100, RPC - 79.93/100, GO - 97.60/100, OI - 56.05/100 and Perception 80/100.

Pondicherry University has been going through a tough phase as it embroiled in student and staff agitations seeking the removal of vice-chancellor Chandra Krishnamurthy (alleging mismanagement and irregularities), from the post.

The MHRD intervened to put the VC on compulsory wait and appointed Dr Anisa B Khan as the vice chancellor (in charge), thus restoring order in the campus.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has been approved by the MHRD and launched by Minister of Human Resource Development on 29th September, 2015.

This framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The methodology draws from the overall recommendations broad understanding arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD, to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions.

The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR),” “Research and Professional Practices (RPC),” “Graduation Outcomes (GO),” “Outreach and Inclusivity (OI),” and “Perception”.

According to the website of the MHRD, although the Ranking Frameworks are similar, the exact methodologies are domain specific. Ranking methods have been worked out for 6 categories of institutions i.e., Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Architecture, Universities and Colleges.

Pondicherry University, established under an Act of Parliament in the year 1985, has 15 Schools, 37 Departments and 10 Centres offering 175 PG & Research programmes are within its fold and housed in the 800-acre sprawling Wi-Fi-enabled vibrant campus. The University has over 400 faculty and 6100 students from across the country on its rolls. There are over 45,000 students in its 87 affiliated colleges.
