VILLUPURAM: A 19-year-old student attempted suicide by jumping from the second floor of the Kakuppam Anna University campus around 4.30 pm on Monday, after being rebuked by the HoD for taking his mobile phone into the computer lab. He was admitted to the Mundiyambakkam GH with fractured limbs and hip.
M Dinesh, a second year student of the CSE Department, and some classmates were attending the fourth semester practical session in the lab on Monday, when faculty Suganya Devi noticed that he had brought his mobile phone inside. Suspecting that he was trying to cheat in the exam, she immediately informed HOD Arjun.
It is said that Arjun insisted that Dinesh open his phone’s lock, and found that he was chatting in a Whatsapp group during the session. He reportedly read aloud some messages and showed some of his personal photos to the students.
Kakuppam campus dean Senthil told Express that the authorities in Chennai have been informed and an inquiry would be launched.
