CHENNAI: Police have detained three persons in connection with the murder of the Sriperumbudur panchayat union committee chairman M C Venkatesan at Sunguvarchatram on Thursday.

Four special teams have been formed to crack the Venkatesan murder case.

Venkatesan’s car driver Ramu is also being interrogated. “We have three persons for enquiry and will soon be able to crack the case,” said a senior police officer.

Venkatesan aka Kutty Venkatesan, a former AIADMK union chairman, was allegedly removed from his membership after he became an accused in the murder of PBG Kumaran, a businessman. Soon after he came from prison on bail, he joined the BJP.

On Wednesday afternoon, he was in his car along with his driver on the Chennai-Bangalore national highway. He was attacked by six members who came on three different motorbikes.

“Venkatesan had got off the car to visit a shop, when the gang attacked him killing him on the spot. The gang threatened the driver and damaged the car before they fled the scene,” said the police officer. Police suspect business rivalry was the motive behind the murder.
