CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Monday unanimously adopted the resolution moved by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa urging the Centre to change the name of Madras High Court as Tamil Nadu High Court and not as Chennai High Court as has been proposed. She urged the Centre to  make necessary amendment to the The High Courts (Alteration of names) Bill, 2016 to be moved for changing the name of Madras High Court and two other courts.

Leaders of all parties in the State Assembly - DMK, Congress, IUML, Mukkulathor Pulipadai and Manithaneya Jananayka Katchi welcomed the move.

Moving the resolution, the Chief Minister said the jurisdiction of Madras High Court would cover entire Tamil Nadu and not Chennai alone. As such, calling it as Tamilnadu High Court would be more appropriate than naming it as Chennai High Court as proposed. Further, the High Courts in other States had been called by the name of the States.

In this connection, she recalled how former Chief Minister Arignar Anna had renamed Madras State as Tamilnadu in 1969.
