10 panchaloha idols unearthed in Thanjavur

Ten panchaloha idols, including a 2.5-foot one of Lord Shiva, were unearthed by workers while digging trenches.

THANJAVUR: Ten panchaloha (made of five metals) idols, including a 2.5-foot one of Lord Shiva, were unearthed by workers while digging trenches to lay water pipelines near a temple at Peravoorani here, officials said.

The workers found the idols at a depth of five feet while digging trenches near the Sri Samantha Swamy temple, they said. Tahsildhar Raghu Nathan rushed to the spot on receiving information last evening, seized the idols and sent them to the treasury, the officials said. The antiquity of the idols was being ascertained, they added.
