Dancing Jailer Suspended in Salem After Video Goes Viral

SALEM: A deputy jailer, whose dance to a rhythmic drum beat that was captured on a mobile phone camera and went viral on social media and instant messaging apps, was placed under suspension on Tuesday.

According to police sources, Shankaran (58), the deputy jailer of Attur sub jail in Salem district, was in Chennai to take part in the Republic Day parade. On that day, in front of other police personnel inside a closed room, Shankaran performed an impromptu dance while in uniform, which some personnel captured on camera and circulated on social media including Facebook and instant messaging platforms like WhatsApp.

Following this, the then Salem Central Prison Superintendent Shanmugasundaram conducted inquiry. During this, another allegation surfaced against Shankaran that he forced a prisoner to cut his hair and do a massage last month. In the meanwhile, Shankaran was transferred to Coimbatore prison.

Based on the inquiry, the new superintendent of Salem Central Prison M Senthil Kumar served suspension order to Shankaran on Tuesday. When contacted, Senthil Kumar confirmed to Express about the suspension.
