COIMBATORE: A class X student gave birth to a girl child at a hospital on Monday morning. Police said that the father of the child was a 27-year-old auto driver, who is currently absconding.

Sources from Perur All Woman Police said that the girl, living in the outskirts of the city, was studying at a higher secondary school. Her parents are reported to be conservancy workers.

Police said that the girl fell in love with the 27-year-old man three years ago. He was working as driver of a goods vehicle. The two had been in a physical relationship. The girl’s parents, her teachers, and indeed the girl herself, were all unaware that she was pregnant, say sources.

Late on Sunday night, the girl developed labour pain and complained of it to her parents. The girl’s parents took her to a private hospital in the city, where doctors confirmed that the teenager was pregnant. The girl gave birth on Monday.

The girl then told her parents of her relationship with the auto driver.

The Coimbatore district police were informed of the incident and visited the girl and her parents. They conducted an inquiry and learned of her lover’s identity. Police sources said that the parents of the girl were reluctant to register a complaint, as the man is reported to be ready to marry the girl once she turns 18 years.

However, senior police officials maintained that a case would be registered in the coming days.
