THOOTHUKUDI: The Mahila Court in Thoothukudi, on Tuesday, sentenced a 48-year-old man to five years imprisonment for attempting to rape an 80-year-old woman. The victim was identified as Madathi, from Rajapudhukudi near Kayathar. The incident happened on the night of October 10, 2013. Murugan, a mechanic, barged into the victim’s house in an inebriated state. Upon entering, he tried to rape her but as Madathi raised an alarm neighbours rescued her. In the incident Madathi sustained injuries in her private parts and was hospitalised. Judge Flora, in her judgment, said that two years imprisonment and Rs 1,000 would be levied as fine for forcefully entering the house of Madathi and five years imprisonment and Rs 2,000 fine for trying to rape her. However, the punishment is to be served concurrently. Hence Murugan will serve five years and pay Rs 3,000 in fine.
