Gallantry Award for Flood Rescue Heroes

CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday presented Anna Medals for Gallantry to four police personnel, Gandhi Adigal Police Medal to three police personnel and Kottai Ameer Award for Communal Harmony.

The Anna Medal for Gallantry carries a cheque for Rs 1 lakh, a medal worth Rs 5,000 and a certificate. This year, one police officer and a volunteer who rescued a large number of flood-hit people in Chennai received this medal. Two other persons also got this medal.

MS Bhaskar, inspector, KK Nagar, Chennai, saved the lives of many during the floods. He took the initiative to tap available resources including voluntary organisations, local fishermen, fishing boats, rubber buoys and boats for the rescue operation.  S Mohammad Yunus of Choolaimedu saved around 2,100  persons hit by the floods including a pregnant woman in Urapakkam. She has named her daughter Yunus.  Kottai Ameer Communal Harmony award was given to MB Abubacker, Adhirampattinam, Thanjavur district for striving to maintain communal harmony. The award carries a medal, a cheque for Rs 25,000 and a certificate.

Gandhi Adigal Police Medal was received by three police personnel, who did outstanding work in curbing illicit liquor.
