Smuggled Cigarettes and Gold Seized

CHENNAI: DRI, Chennai seized 25 lakh sticks of Indonesia origin cigarettes worth Rs.1.9 crore at Madhavaram on Wednesday.  Based on suspicion, officials from the DRI in Chennai examined an imported container labelled as carrying escalator spare parts, nuts and bolts. Detailed inspection resulted in  detection of concealment of 25,63,200 Indonesian cigarette sticks in 178 carton boxes totally valued at Rs.1.94 crores.

These goods were seized at Madhavaram Container Freight Station (CFS) under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962 and further investigations to track the smugglers were in progress.

Smuggled Gold

On the same day (Wednesday), DRI officials at Trichy caught an airlines employee and an international passenger for trying to smuggle 1.9 kg of gold. 

The passenger with the assistance of an airlines executive at Trichy International Airport were caught when they tried to surreptitiously remove the smuggled gold from the airport. They were subjected to detailed examination by the DRI officials.
