SALEM: Bringing to fore the ugly side of social media, a 21-year-old girl’s morphed nude photo was uploaded on Facebook last week. After police took on the case, another morphed nude picture was released on Facebook along with her father’s mobile number on Sunday night, spurring the girl to commit suicide on Monday.
The 21-year-old, a resident of Elampillai in Salem district, was the daughter of a weaver. She was at home after completing her undergraduation in Chemistry. Last week, her morphed nude picture was released on Facebook and her friends informed her about it.
Following this, on June 23, her father lodged a complaint with the District Superintendent of Police (SP) office to take action against the person who released the picture.
Later, the complaint was forwarded to Magudanchavadi Police. The police spoke with the girl and based on the information provided, they questioned a person, but did not find the accused.
The police informed the girl’s parents that they will find the accused with the help of cyber crime police and asked them to wait them for 15 days. Meanwhile, on Sunday night, another morphed nude photo was released on Facebook along with mobile number of the girl’s father. On Monday afternoon, she hanged herself to death when her parents were not at home.
Her parents later found her and took her to Salem Government Hospital, but the doctors there pronounced her ‘brought dead’.
Speaking to reporters, her distraught father said that police negligence led to his daughter’s death. Immediate action in the case might have not induced her to commit suicide. Until the accused was arrested by the police, we will not receive the body, he said.
The relatives of the deceased urged the police to arrest the accused soon and prevent such incidents in future.
