SALEM: A 14-year-old girl committed suicide after she was allegedly raped by an 18-year-old boy in Salem district.
According to police, Roja (14, name changed) was a class 10 student from a government school in Veeraganur village in Salem district who had been in love with an 18-year-old boy for the past one year. On Saturday evening, near a lake in the area, the boy allegedly raped the girl and tied her hands up.
Meanwhile, panic gripped Roja's mother as her daughter had not returned home in a long while. After searching an entire night, the local villagers found the girl near the lake with her hands tied.
However, despite finding out about the rape, Roja's mother did not lodge a police complaint. On Monday evening, the girl consumed poison and was found unconscious. Her mother and relatives admitted the girl to Salem Government Hospital.
A police complaint was filed only after her death on Thursday midnight and a case in this regard was registered against the boy. The police arrested the accused and remanded him at a Borstal school.
