CHENNAI: In a tragic incident, a six-year-old boy who was playing on the ground drowned after he accidentally fell into a pit filled with rainwater on the school campus at Vadamelpakkam near Maraimalai Nagar in the neighbouring Kancheepuram district on Wednesday afternoon.

The body identified as D Sabari, son of a farmer from Kavanur near Kaattupakkam, was studying in class 2 at Loyala Academy.  “On Wednesday afternoon, the boy along with his friends were playing when Sabari accidentally fell into the pit that was dug to throw garbage. Due to the rains for the past two days, the pit was filled with water which was more than five feet,” said a police officer.
“However, his friends also did not notice him fall,” added the officer.

The incident came to light, when the teacher was taking attendance in the afternoon and found the child missing. Later, when the staff were searching for the child, they found his body in the pit. The school management sent the body to a private hospital in Potheri, which was shifted to the government hospital later.
