NEW DELHI: The Union Home Ministry has accorded ‘Y’ category security cover to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam after assessments by security agencies suggested a threat to him.

Official sources said the CRPF will provide the security cover to Paneerselvam and a paramilitary team will take charge of his security responsibility later this week.

A recent incident of hurling of stones on the vehicle of Panneerselvam in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu and other similar untoward incidents led to a security audit by the Intelligence Bureau which suggested protection by a Central paramilitary force.

The development comes after a delegation led by AIADMK MP and Panneerselvam loyalist V Maitreyan met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh last month demanding central security for the former CM in view of his scheduled movements during the upcoming bypolls in the RK Nagar constituency of the State.

Under the ‘Y’ category security cover, Paneeselvam will be protected by a team of three to four paramilitary commandos during his movements within the State.
