CHENNAI: Expressing anguish over the alleged malpractices in R K Nagar Assembly segment, where a bypoll was cancelled,  DMK working president M K Stalin on Wednesday said  his party and allies would back the Election Commission (EC) if it introduces new rules and regulations to prevent irregularities during elections.

Addressing a public meeting at New Washermanpet to protest the cancellation of the by-poll, he said, “These type of irregularities should not recur in any constituency. To ensure that, the EC can formulate a new set of rules and regulations or amendments (to existing Act) as required.”

He said the DMK and its allies will certainly support such measures.  Attacking the AIADMK government of plunging in corruption over the last five years, Stalin demanded setting up of an inquiry commission, headed by a retired SC judge. He also attacked former CM and leader of the breakaway AIADMK-PT Amma O Panneerselvam alleging he had been paving the way for massive corruption with the backing of V K Sasikala over the years, but now appeared to be trying to create an image that he was clean.

Referring to the IT raids on the premises of sand mining baron Shekar Reddy, former Chief Secretary P Rama Mohana Rao and Health Minister C Vijayabasker, the DMK leader said the next leader in the list of IT  department is Panneerselvam and he cannot hide behind the shield of BJP for long.
