CHENNAI: The AIADMK faction led by O Panneerselvam is wary of the feelers for a merger sent out by some members of the rival camp led by V K Sasikala, whose nephew T T V Dhinakaran faces the risk of being arrested in a bribery scandal.

Some of Panneerselvam’s supporters have expressed doubts about the assurance that both Sasikala and her family would be kept at bay if a merger was brought about between the two groups, AIADMK-PT Amma and a potential breakway group from the other faction, AIADMK-Amma, which is in the custody of Sasikala.

Hectic parleys have been going on in the ruling AIADMK-Amma camp over the possibility of sidelining deputy general secretary and general secretary V K Sasikala to facilitate the merger.

The leader of the AIADMK-PT Amma faction, O Panneerselvam has stated he was open to a merger.

Reports suggest that Divakaran, Sasikala's brother, is fuelling discontent against Dhinakaran within the ruling faction, and trying to exert influence on affairs in the party.

Former minister KP Munusamy, one of the key leaders of the AIADMK-PT Amma faction, said a merger proposal would not be considered unless the entire family of Sasikala was thrown out of the party.

"We can't let them use us a pawns in their game," he said Tuesday.

Munusamy said there was no information from the other side on holding talks about a merger.

Another prominent MP in the O Panneerselvam camp too sounded indifferent to the idea.

"Where does the question of a merger arise? He (T T V Dhinakaran) is going to be arrested by the Delhi police and Sasikala is losing her position in the party. We are going to emerge as the real party legally," he said, meaning that the AIADMK-PT Amma would emerge victorious in the tussle.

The odds seemed to be stacked against Sasikala with a complaint challenging her elevation as temporary general secretary pending before the Election Commission.

Panneerselvam is scheduled to return to Chennai from his native town later Tuesday evening. He is likely to discuss the merger issue with the core members of his faction.
