Petition to replace unqualified Archakas

A writ plea has been filed in the HC to remove unqualified archakas (priests) in temples.

CHENNAI: A writ plea has been filed in the HC to remove unqualified archakas (priests) in temples under the control of the State Tourism, Culture and Hindu Religious Endowment departments and HR&E) department and to appoint qualified and trained archakas, irrespective of their caste.

Justice V Parthiban, before whom the writ petition from K Sabarinathan of Tiruvotriyur came up for hearing on Thursday, ordered notice to the authorities concerned, returnable by two weeks. According to advocate S Senthilnathan, the State Government took a policy decision that all Hindus, who have had the training, could become archakas in all temples controlled by Government agencies without any caste discrimination.
