MADURAI: The disastrous Russian-based online game Blue Whale Challenge has claimed the life of a college student in Madurai.

A 19-year-old boy from the district has allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself inside his house on Wednesday evening, as a task of completing the last challenge of the game. This is the first death reported in the state due to the game which has claimed many young lives in the country and around the world.

According to police sources, Vignesh (19), younger son of Jeyamani and Vanitha, is the resident of Kalaignar Nagar at Vilacheri in Madurai district. Vignesh was doing his second-year B.Com in a private college in Thiruparankundram.

On Wednesday afternoon, when his parents were away from the house, Vignesh took a friend along to his house for lunch. After lunch, the friend left. During the evening hours, when Jeyamani returned to his house, he found that his son had hanged himself.

Police were informed and they sent his body to Tirumangalam Government Hospital for a postmortem examination. When the police officials conducted a preliminary investigation, they found that Vignesh had carved the shape of a whale on his left arm using a sharp object and written the words 'Blue Whale' below carving using a blue ink pen.

The police also recovered a handwritten note that says: "Blue Whale - this is not a game but a disaster. Once you step inside, you can never leave."

Police officials suspected that Vignesh might have committed suicide by taking the Blue Whale challenge, which tells players to perform 50 dangerous tasks, with the final one ending in killing oneself. Police are checking his mobile phone to find clues on whether the boy was indeed playing the game and whether he was blackmailed or pressured into committing suicide.

The Austinpatti police have registered a case and are conducting further investigations.

The Blue Whale Challenge online game, which was first started in Russia, was banned in the country as several people committed suicide by playing the game. The game that has 50 weird tasks with several disturbing challenges forces the person playing the game to commit suicide which is the final and 50th task of the game. In India, at least two people have committed suicide by playing the dangerous Blue Whale Challenge online game, and there are others who have been suspected of killing themselves after getting involved with the game.
