Curtains down on RK Nagar bypoll campaign today

EC directs all party workers, brought from outside, to leave the constituency immediately after 5 pm on Tuesday; vehicle permits will also seize to be valid.

CHENNAI: As the campaign for the December 21 RK Nagar by-election is set to end at 5 pm on Tuesday, the Election Commission has directed all political functionaries, party workers, etc. who have been brought from outside and who are not voters in RK Nagar, to leave the constituency immediately after 5 pm on Tuesday.

Kalyanamandapams (wedding halls), community halls, lodges, and guest house would be checked to find out whether outsiders were accommodated. The vehicle permits given to candidates including star campaigners would cease to be valid with effect from 5 pm on Tuesday.

The Commission said that the release of results of opinion polls or conduct of opinion polls would be prohibited for 48 hours,  from 5 pm on Tuesday to 5 pm on December 21. Exit polls have already been banned between 7 am and 5.30 pm on the day of polling.

Counting of votes

Meanwhile, senior officials inspected Queen Mary’s College in Mylapore on Monday where the counting of votes polled in the by-election will take place on December 24.  They also inspected the strong room where the EVMs would be kept and the security arrangements to be made there.  During counting, there will be 14 tables and the exercise will be completed in 19 rounds.

So far, unaccounted cash of `30.4 lakh has been seized and 22 cases have been filed in RK Nagar, the EC said adding that as of now, 75 flying squads, 21 static surveillance squads, and 20 video squads were on duty, monitoring the election process in RK Nagar. As many as 45 check-posts have been functioning for the bypoll.Till Monday around 85 per cent of booth slips have been distributed to the voters, added the Election Commission.
