Integral Coach Factory coaches to get swanky look soon, modular toilets proposed

The dull interiors of the conventional train coaches manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory will soon get a face-lift.

CHENNAI: The dull interiors of the conventional train coaches manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) will soon get a face-lift. Of around 50,000 coaches plying across the country, 3,000 conventional coaches will be revamped in the first phase. ICF officials say these coaches will have modular toilets, LED lighting and other features, aimed at improving the cabin aesthetic.

As per the Railway Ministry’s plan, all conventional coaches are set to be replaced with the German-designed Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches which have advanced safety features. However, the replacement process, to be carried out in a phased manner, is likely to take a minimum of five years. As a stop-gap measure, the Railway Board has recently decided to enhance passenger rider comfort by completely overhauling the interiors of conventional coaches.

Senior ICF officials said the board has entrusted the responsibility to them. “We have been asked to frame specifications for the new-look coaches, finalise and float tenders for the project.”
Under the first phase, around 3,000 coaches plying in the southern, south western and south central railways will be recalled and have their interiors upgraded in a span of two years.

Detailing some features, ICF officials said the wall panels (presently covered in laminated sheets) would be replaced by fibre reinforced panels (FRP). These panels will ensure improved durability, enable better maintenance and sanitation, he said.

“Also, these coaches will have much better seats and beds. It is also possible there will be a better flooring and side walls, designed to decrease noise,” the official explained. There will also be two passenger information screens, providing details about the journey, installed inside every coach.

“We hope to start the tender process around October, following which a private contractor will be identified”, the official said. The contractor will utilise the facilities available at six workshops in southern region, including the carriage and wagon works in Perambur.
