CHENNAI: Lodging the State’s strong protest against Andhra Pradesh unilaterally building a check dam across River Kusa, a sub-tributary of the Kosasthalaiyar at Nelavayl in Karvet Nagar mandal of Chittoor district, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday urged his Andhra Pradesh counterpart N Chandrababu Naidu to stop work on check dam with immediate effect.

Palaniswami, in his letter to Naidu, said that building a check dam across the Kusa without the consent of the lower riparian state of Tamil Nadu had caused great alarm and fear among the farmers in Tamil Nadu.

“The Kusa supports an ayacut of about 354.32 acres fed by the Veligaram tank in Tamil Nadu. Any intervention of the flow to this tank is of great concern to the farmers who depend on the waters of this tank,” Palaniswami said.

He added that the new check dam would affect the natural flow in the stream or channel taking off from it and would obstruct the flow to the Veligaram tank.

Palaniswami urged Naidu to intervene in the matter immediately and instruct the officials concerned to stop all building work at Nelavayl and also not to take up any diversion work or check dam work across the Kusa or in any tributary or sub-tributaries of the Kosasthalaiyar without prior concurrence of the Tamil Nadu Government.
