Approach Panel on public property defacement: Madras HC

Madras High Court on Friday directed the parties concerned to take up incidents of defacement of public property with the newly formed committee for appropriate action.

CHENNAI: Madras High Court on Friday directed the parties concerned to take up incidents of defacement of public property with the newly formed committee for appropriate action.

The First Bench of Acting Chief Justice H G Ramesh and Justice R Mahadevan issued the directive while disposing of a PIL from advocate G Rajendran and a contempt application from activist KR Ramaswamy.

While the PIL sought a directive to the Government to implement the court’s January 9, 2014 order, the contempt petition wanted the officials concerned to be punished for not implementing it. The Bench said the Government could not be expected to take action overnight.

As rightly submitted by the Additional Advocate-General, the department did not have sufficient staff. Now that the Government had formed the panel, the petitioners could approach it if they came across any violation of the 2014 order.
