CHENNAI: Around 40 members of various student outfits gathered at the entrance of the IIT-Madras on Tuesday night and conducted a ‘beef fest’ by consuming beef in the open space.
They raised slogans condemning the alleged attack on the IIT student R Sooraj, who took part in a beef fest in the campus on Sunday night.

The protesters demanded action against those who assaulted Sooraj and raised slogans against the Union government for infringing on the rights of people on their food habits.
At around 8:30 pm, with a large police force already deployed, the protesters gathered in front of the IIT’s main gate to prevent their entry into the campus.

After about 20 minutes, police arrested 15 protesters and took them to the Kotturpuram Police Station.
Meanwhile, another group of students assembled near the Himalaya mess in the campus in support of Sooraj.

According to one of the students who was present there, “Several wanted to ensure justice for Sooraj (the victim). We will decide on a course of action on Wednesday.”
