THANJAVUR:Even as a brief respite from the rainfall on Sunday allowed farmers to take up samba paddy cultivation work in fits and starts, a sudden downpour at noon claimed the life of a farmer as he was struck by lightning in Tiruvaiathukudi village near Papanasam, Murugesan was engaged in collecting samba nurseries from a field when he was struck by lightning.

He died on the spot His body was taken to Papanasam GH for post-mortem. In another incident, plaster from the roof of a house in Ponpethi near Kabisthalam fell on four-year-old Nithin Murugan, son of Singaravadivel. He was injured and rushed to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. Meanwhile, A Annadurai, District Collector, on Sunday inspected the Vennar river at Palliyeri where the Muthalaimuthu Vaari drains and Vadavaru branches out.
