‘AI-powered systems can make better decisions than most doctors’

Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered systems can deliver better quality medical care than a vast majority of doctors today,” said political analyst and former head of TCS Healthcare.

CHENNAI: “Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered systems can deliver better quality medical care than a vast majority of doctors today,” said political analyst and former head of TCS Healthcare Innovation Dr Sumanth C Raman at a conference on ‘Building A Health care Policy Ecosystem in India, 2018’, which was organised by The School of Policy and Governance in association with the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, on Saturday.

“AI-powered systems threaten to be highly disruptive,” he said. “It puts a lot of livelihood at risk and that’s why there is a lot of hesitation to adopt it. There needs to be a fundamental change in the mindset of doctors and patients towards using technology in health care... If you want to save healthcare, you have to save it from the health care industry where the profit motive is a big driving force,” he said.

Another speaker Keshav Desiraju, IAS (Retd), who was the former Union Secretary of Health and the Chairperson of the Governing Board of the Population Foundation of India, said that students who receive subsidised education should be motivated to serve the country for some time.

“Even private health care facilities will have trouble keeping medical staff in rural areas,” he said and highlighted that medical colleges should look at promoting courses such as family medicine and geriatric medicine.
