CHENNAI: Inquiry panels are mostly an eye-wash, incurring a waste of public money, Justice S M Subramanian of the Madras High Court has observed. The judge directed the Additional Advocate-General to file an affidavit with details of how many commissions were functioning and how long they had been functioning.
What is the use of these commissions, when they produce no result? What is the necessity to constitute such panels when there exists a separate Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption? These were the questions that the judge posed when the case relating to the alleged irregularities in the construction of a new building to accommodate the Assembly and the Secretariat in Omandurar government estate, came up for further hearing before the judge on Thursday. A questionnaire had been issued to the then Chief Minister, M Karunanidhi, under whose regime the building was declared open in March 2011.
